Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is a province in eastern Canada, located in the Maritime Provinces region on the Atlantic coast in the east of the country. Bordered by New Brunswick to the west, with an area of 55,284 km², it ranks 12th among Canadian provinces and territories, while it ranks 7th in terms of population with 971,395 inhabitants in 2019. Halifax is its capitale and largest city. Its prime minister is Stephen Mc Neil and its Lieutenant governor Arthur Joseph Leblanc. The spoken language is English.

Nova Scotia has a modified continental climate that is greatly influenced by the proximity of the sea. The Atlantic coastal regions experience the warmest winter and coolest summer temperatures. Forests occupy about four-fifths of the land area. Animal life includes such game species as deer and moose and, among the birds, partridge, pheasant, and duck.

After thousands of years of occupation by aboriginal peoples, the region came to the attention of Europeans, perhaps during the Viking voyages of c. AD 1000 and certainly by the late 15th century. In 1620, King Charles I of England sends a troop of Scottish men to establish a colony under the name of Nova Scotia. When a peace treaty was signed between France and England, New England came under French rule. French colonization continued throughout the entire region of the present-day Maritime Provinces, focused on what is now the Nova Scotia Peninsula. However, this peninsular Acadia fell under British jurisdiction after the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. After several exchanges between the French and the British, and several waves of migration, Nova Scotia became one of the first four founding provinces of Canada on July 1, 1867.

Nova Scotia has a diversified economy based on both land and sea resources. Traditional industries such as fishing, forestry, and mining are in decline, while tourism and other service industries are becoming much more significant components of the economy.
